Hi, my name is Gaye Winn Holmes, and it is my great pleasure to serve as the principal of W. E. Parker Elementary School.  I am a proud graduate of Strom Thurmond High School and Clemson University.  All but one year, of my almost thirty-nine years, in education has been spent serving the children of Edgefield County. This is my tenth year leading W. E. Parker Elementary. I am married to Thomas Holmes who is employed by the S. C. Department of Education with pupil transportation. We have two sons, two daughters-in-law, a sweet granddaughter, and two dogs. We are avid Clemson football fans and enjoy road trips and camping in our motorhome every chance we get.

Our school is focused on helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by striving to create effective communicators, inspired learners, productive workers, responsible citizens, and resourceful thinkers through a mirage of challenging activities within the classrooms.  We provide engaging educational opportunities that encourage positive academics and social growth.  Our school pledge promotes good citizenship and sets the tone of the day by challenging students and faculty to respect self, others, property and learning daily.

All of our teachers are highly qualified and skilled at tailoring instruction to fit the needs of their students. Professional development is planned that addresses our yearly school goal and provides teachers appropriate research-based, field-tested strategies to enhance their classroom instruction.  Our Literacy Coach assists our teachers in the full implementation of Balanced Literacy in all of our reading classrooms. Throughout the school year teachers implement lessons that incorporate STEM, the arts, and social sciences. We encourage our students to use higher level thinking skills and develop a strong work ethic.  High quality assessments are indicators of success as scores continue to rise.  We were recently awarded the Palmetto Gold Award for attaining high levels of general performance and the Palmetto Silver Award for substantial progress in closing the achievement gap between disaggregated groups.  Our teachers at WEP are dedicated to providing the absolute best in instruction and care for our students.  We are fortunate to provide students with physical education weekly and art, music, computer and STEM academy one week per month.  We also have a coding club that meets once a week after school.

We are proud of our solid past of academic success and strong parent involvement. Our students are constantly pursing excellence and are offered many leadership opportunities.  Students manage our school’s store; serve as library helpers, morning greeters, and office helpers. After school, students are able to participate in chorus performing in many local events.   The highlight for chorus students is the year end performance of a classic dramatic musical such as this year’s, Seusical the Musical.  We also have a chapter of the Elementary Honor Society that sponsors school wide events focusing on community service. The Good News Club also meets weekly.

Our parents group at WEP continues to be dedicated to providing support for our school assisting us with honor roll parties, field days, the Fall Festival, and providing much needed technology for our classrooms.  We hope that you will consider joining the PTO or SIC to show your support of our school.  Several events are held both during and after school to bring parents and our community together. Breakfasts with our moms, dads, and grandparents and two book fairs are held.   Open Houses, quarterly family nights, and two report card conference nights allow teachers to share goals and expectations with our parents.

We are enriching our students daily, encouraging them to stretch their wings, and empowering them to take control of their own learning.  When they leave WEP, it is our hope that they will possess world class skills, life and career characteristics, and can transfer what they have learned to the next level of education and into the working world.
